Thank you for your presentation. I too am interested in how your experience this summer confirmed your study of Spanish. You specifically mention children as interpreters for their parents. Did working with this population lead to any ideas of how to bridge this vital communication gap for adults non-English speakers?

Hi Ms. Cathy,
My experiences this summer taught me a lot. I enjoyed my time with SHECP and the connections I made through them. The author of the book and I have discussed and will discuss more about his book, poverty, and how the pandemic has impacted poverty in different communities. This summer I plan on looking into Breakthrough: Greater Boston, my first pairing with SHECP, to see if they have any internship opportunities available. If not, I will use my experiences from SHECP to work with more non-profits or groups who work with those in impoverished areas in the metro Atlanta area.

Hi Ms. Amy,
This summer with SHECP, we discussed heavily the meanings, causes, and consequences of poverty. Working with the youth and advocating for them, it was different to see what poverty meant to them and how the consequences of poverty do not define you or your future. The way they came together and brought their community together despite all the chaos that was occurring in the world that had an impact on all aspects of poverty: the meanings, causes, and consequences.

Hi Ms. Lisa,
Thank you for this thoughtful question! I really had to think about this because I have found all aspects of my Spanish studies helpful especially during the summer. Learning Spanish in college has taught me to have patience and confidence because learning another language is no easy task. I would say learning these skills from my Spanish studies were the most helpful when talking to the students and their parents in Spanish.
